Moving to land caused many big changes. Animals grew lungs to breathe air. They grew ears to hear. They also grew stronger bones to hold up their weight. Most tetrapods today are amniotes. These animals can lay eggs on land. This is possible because of a special part called an amnion. The amnion keeps the egg moist. This allowed life to spread across the Earth.

How did these animals move from water to land? It was a huge change that happened in steps. First, lobe-finned fish began to evolve into different forms.

Some of the oldest evidence comes from tiny footprints called trackways. By the end of the Late Devonian, body fossils became more common.

These fossils are about 370 to 360 million years old. They show us the very first animals that looked like tetrapods. These early species belong to a group called the stem group.

There are many different kinds of tetrapods living today. Most are amniotes, which means they can lay eggs on land.

This is possible because of the amnion, a part that keeps eggs moist. Amniotes split into two main branches called sauropsids and synapsids. Sauropsids include reptiles, dinosaurs, and birds.

Synapsids include all mammals, including humans. Today, there are over 30,000 different species in this large group.

Most tetrapods are known for having four limbs with digits, such as fingers or toes. However, the definition is more complex than just counting legs. Some animals, like snakes or legless lizards, are still tetrapods. They belong to this group because of their evolutionary ancestry. Even if limbs are lost, the biological connection remains.

The transition from water to land was a massive evolutionary change. Tetrapods evolved from semiaquatic animals called tetrapodomorphs. These animals descended from ancient lobe-finned fish, or sarcopterygians, during the Middle Devonian period. This process involved moving from gill-based respiration to lung-based breathing. It also required changing from tail-propelled swimming to limb-based walking. To survive on land, tetrapods developed new anatomical features. They grew distinct head and neck structures for feeding. They also developed appendicular skeletons, including shoulder and pelvic girdles, to bear weight.

Evolutionary history shows these changes happening in distinct stages. Early tetrapodomorphs were transitional between fish and true four-limbed animals. They often still looked like lobe-finned fishes. The oldest evidence of four-limbed vertebrates comes from Middle Devonian trackways. Body fossils became more common near the end of the Late Devonian, around 370 to 360 million years ago. These early species are called stem-tetrapods. They are related to modern tetrapods but do not belong to any current group. By the start of the Carboniferous Period, 360 million years ago, some were using a semiaquatic lifestyle.

Scientists use different methods to define what a tetrapod is. Many paleontologists use an apomorphy-based definition. This focuses on newly evolved traits, like limbs and digits. Others use cladistics, which is a way of classifying organisms by their evolutionary relationships. This method defines a group by a common ancestor. Some researchers, like Michel Laurin, prefer the crown group definition. A crown group is a subset of animals descended from the last common ancestor of all living tetrapods. This definition would exclude many ancient fossils like Ichthyostega.

Modern tetrapods are divided into two major groups based on how they reproduce. Most species today are amniotes, which evolved in the Late Carboniferous. The key innovation for amniotes is the amnion. This is a structure that allows eggs to retain moisture on land. Amniotes split into two major branches. The first branch is the sauropsids, which include reptiles, dinosaurs, and birds. The second branch is the synapsids, which include mammals and their extinct relatives.

Biodiversity within Tetrapoda is incredibly high. There are more than 30,000 described species living today. This diversity has grown over time, though it was interrupted by crises like the Permian–Triassic extinction event. In the Palaeozoic era, amphibians were the dominant group. During the Mesozoic, reptiles dominated the landscape. In the Cenozoic, birds and mammals saw explosive growth.

Today, tetrapods occupy almost every environment on Earth. Some remain semiaquatic, like many modern amphibians. Others have returned to the water, such as whales in the Cenozoic. Some have even evolved powered flight, like birds and bats. This shows the incredible flexibility of the tetrapod body plan. From the first fish-like ancestors to modern humans, the group continues to adapt.
