It sat between two giant land masses. One was called Laurasia. The other was called Gondwana.

As the Earth changed, the ocean began to break apart. Large pieces of land moved north. These pieces were called plates. As they moved, they pushed into each other. This movement created big mountain ranges. It also closed the ocean.

The Tethys Ocean did not just vanish. It split into new parts. One part became the Indian Ocean. Another part became the Mediterranean Sea. Some parts also became the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea.

The ocean was once full of life. Many sea reptiles lived in its waters. Some lived on small islands. On these islands, some dinosaurs grew very small. This is called insular dwarfism. Other animals, like pterosaurs, grew very large. This is called insular gigantism.
