Testudo is a group of small tortoises.

You can find them in Europe. They also live in parts of Asia and North Africa.

These tortoises are small. They can be 7.0 to 35 cm long. They weigh between 0.7 and 7.0 kg. Some of these tortoises are losing their homes. This happens when their land is destroyed.

Male tortoises work hard to find a mate. They use a courtship ritual. This is a set of steps to show they are healthy. Males might chase, bite, or ram a female. This takes a lot of power. Females watch these displays to pick a good mate.

Females can mate with many males. This is called a polyandrous mating system. It helps ensure their eggs are fertilized. A female can even store sperm for four years. This lets her lay eggs even if she does not find a male. One group of eggs might have fathers from different males.
