Test particle

physical science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Scientists use a special model to study the world. They call this a test particle. A test particle is a tiny model of an object. It is so small that it does not change things. It has almost no mass or size. This helps scientists study how big things work. It makes hard math much easier to do.

We can use this idea in many ways. In electricity, we use a test charge. This is a tiny part with an electric charge. It helps us see how electric fields work. The charge feels a force from the field.

We also use it to study gravity. Imagine a small satellite near the Earth. The Earth is very big. The satellite is very small. We can treat the satellite as a test particle. It moves in the Earth's gravity. But the satellite is too small to move the Earth. This makes it easier to track its path in space. In big theories like general relativity, it works the same way. The particle is too small to change the space around it.
