He used a special way to make his cartoons. He mixed his own art with cutouts from old Victorian photos. His drawings often had soft colors and odd, bulbous shapes. These animations helped link the different comedy sketches together. He also acted in many Python sketches. He sometimes played roles that required heavy makeup or big costumes. For example, he played a knight in armor. He also played a character named Gumby.

After working with Monty Python, Gilliam started directing his own films. In 1977, he directed his first solo film called Jabberwocky. He later created what is known as the Trilogy of Imagination. This set of films includes Time Bandits from 1981. It also includes Brazil from 1985 and The Adventures of Baron Munchausen from 1988. These stories explore how people use imagination to escape a hard world. He also made a group of films set in North America. These include The Fisher King from 1991 and 12 Monkeys from 1995.

Making movies can sometimes be very difficult. In 1999, Gilliam tried to film The Man Who Killed Don Quixote. This was a very large project with a budget of $32.1 million. However, the film was cancelled during the first week of shooting. A flood damaged the set and an actor was hurt. This led to a $15 million insurance claim. Later, he directed The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus in 2009. This film had a budget of $30 million. It earned over $60 million at theaters around the world.

He even tried directing theater shows and operas. In 2006, he directed a show for a Russian clown artist. In 2011, he made his debut directing an opera in London. His work shows how art can be both funny and serious. He continues to be a very important figure in the world of film.
