Imagine you are squeezing a soft sponge. The force inside the sponge changes depending on where you press. To describe these forces, scientists use a tool called a tensor.

A tensor is a way to organize many numbers together. These numbers can form a simple list or a big grid. We call these grids arrays. A tensor can be a single number, called a scalar. It can also be a list of numbers, called a vector. Higher-order tensors use even more numbers in many directions.

Math experts use tensors to show how different things relate to each other. For example, a tensor can take one vector and turn it into another. Tensors are very helpful in physics. They help us study how materials stretch or bend. They also help us understand electricity and how gravity works in space.

In the year 1900, math leaders like Tullio Levi-Civita helped make tensors popular. They used these tools to study the shape of space. Today, we often see tensors acting as a tensor field. This means the tensor values change at every point in an object.
