Tenerife is the largest and most populous island in the Canary Islands.

The island's landscape is defined by dramatic volcanic features. Mount Teide is located in the center of the island. It is part of the Teide National Park. This park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Mount Teide is the highest elevation in all of Spain. It is also the highest elevation among all Atlantic Ocean islands. When measured from its base, it is the third-largest volcano in the world.

The history of the island begins with the Guanches. These were Berber people who settled the islands. The earliest known settlements date to around 200 BC. Some chronologies from the Cave of the Guanches suggest dates near the sixth century BC.
Before the Spanish arrived, the Guanches had a complex political system. They were ruled by monarchs known as menceyes. These kings governed territories called menceyatos. After the death of the great king Tinerfe, the island was divided into nine menceyatos.
The Spanish conquest of Tenerife was a long process. Attempts to annex the island began as early as 1464. However, the final conquest occurred between 1494 and 1496. Alonso Fernández de Lugo led the Spanish forces.
Spanish rule brought many changes to the island's economy and people. New colonists arrived from Flanders, Italy, and Germany. These immigrants helped grow the population. The settlers cleared pine forests for fuel and farmland. They introduced sugar cane as a major commodity crop in the 1520s. They also cultivated wine grapes, plantains, and cochineal for dyes. Sadly, many native Guanches died from new infectious diseases. These included influenza and likely smallpox. Over time, the new colonists intermarried with the local population.
Today, Tenerife has a dual capital system. Santa Cruz de Tenerife is one capital city. It is the seat of the island council. The city contains the modern building of the Presidency of the Canary Islands.
