Telephone number

technology Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A telephone number is a unique identifier for a telecommunication endpoint. It acts as a digital address within a network, such as the public switched telephone network (PSTN). This address allows the network to locate and reach a specific device. While we usually think of these as sequences of digits, they have historically included letters to represent exchange names. Today, these numbers are vital for routing calls and data across the globe.

The process of making a connection involves several technical steps. First, a calling party enters or dials a sequence of digits on their telephone set. This action transmits the digits as a signaling process to a telephone exchange. The exchange then uses destination code routing to find the correct path. It can complete the call to a local subscriber or use the PSTN to reach a distant party. This mechanism ensures that information reaches the exact intended endpoint.

Telephone numbering plans vary significantly by region. Many countries use a closed numbering plan, which features fixed-length numbers. A prominent example is the North American Numbering Plan. In this system, a number typically consists of a three-digit area code, a three-digit central office code, and a four-digit line number. In contrast, many European countries use open numbering plans. These plans allow for a varying count of digits in each telephone number.

History shows that telephone numbers have evolved from very simple systems. In 1879, the first numbers were used in Lowell, Massachusetts. Dr. Moses Greeley Parker suggested this change to help substitute operators during a measles epidemic. Before this, callers had to request specific names from switchboard operators. Early numbers were very short, often only one to three digits long. By the 1920s, many metropolitan areas used alphanumeric combinations. For example, a number might include an exchange name like "EDgewood" followed by digits.

As technology changed, the format of these numbers shifted again. In the 1960s, the industry moved toward all-number dialing. This change happened because letter-based systems were difficult to spell and distinguish. This era also saw the creation of the "555" prefix in the United States. This prefix was reserved for telephone company use, such as directory assistance. Using "555" in movies helps prevent people from calling real numbers by mistake.

Modern telecommunications rely on international standards to keep everyone connected. The ITU-T recommendation E.164 standardizes the format for the international telephone network. This rule states that an entire number should be 15 digits or shorter. It must begin with an international calling prefix and a country prefix. To represent these numbers in print, the ITU-T recommendation E.123 suggests using a plus sign (+) followed by the country code. On mobile phones, users can often enter this plus sign by holding the "0" or "*" key.

Beyond simple voice calls, telephone numbers serve many different types of devices. They are used to access computer modems, pagers, and fax machines. Even modern data-only cellular devices use them. This includes tablet computers, digital televisions, and mobile hotspots. These devices may not be able to make or accept voice calls, but they still require a number for network identification. This connectivity is maintained through complex standards like the 3GPP, which provides specific encoding for mobile networks.
