In 1524, Spanish soldiers arrived. Their leader was Pedro de Alvarado. The Spanish had horses and guns. The Maya people had never seen horses before. This was a big shock to them.

Tecun Uman fought to protect his people. Many stories tell of his bravery. Some say he wore bright quetzal feathers. They say a quetzal bird was his spirit guide.

Legend says Tecun Uman met Alvarado in battle. He thought the horse and rider were one being. He attacked the horse, but Alvarado killed him with a spear. One story says his spirit bird turned red from his blood. This is why male quetzals have red chests today.

Historians still study if he was one real person. A letter from Alvarado says a great chief died in battle. In 1960, Guatemala named him a national hero. People celebrate him every year on February 20.
