Tecumseh was a prominent Shawnee chief and warrior. He lived from approximately March 9, 1768, to October 5, 1813. He is best known for his efforts to resist United States expansion. Tecumseh sought to protect Native American lands from being taken. He did this by building a large confederacy of different tribes. This group aimed to achieve intertribal unity against common threats.

Tecumseh was born in the Ohio Country. This area is now the state of Ohio. He belonged to the Panther clan of the Kispoko division. His name likely meant "Shooting Star" or "I Cross the Way." These names referenced a meteor associated with his clan. His father, Puckeshinwau, was a Shawnee war chief. His mother, Methoataaskee, was likely from the Pekowi division.

His early life was marked by conflict and displacement. During his childhood, the Shawnee people lost territory to American colonies. These losses occurred through various border conflicts. In 1774, the Battle of Point Pleasant took place. Tecumseh's father was killed during this battle. Later, his older brother Cheeseekau taught him how to be a war leader. Cheeseekau was a noted chief who died in 1792.

Tecumseh developed a specific political philosophy regarding land. At an intertribal conference in 1783, he heard important ideas. Speakers like Joseph Brant argued for tribal unity. They claimed that Native American lands were held in common. This meant no single tribe could sell land alone. Tecumseh embraced this doctrine of common ownership. He believed all tribes must agree before ceding any territory. This stance alarmed American leaders who wanted to sign individual treaties.

In 1805, a new religious movement began. Tecumseh's younger brother, Tenskwatawa, founded this movement. It encouraged Native Americans to reject European influences. They were urged to return to traditional lifestyles. In 1808, the brothers established Prophetstown in present-day Indiana. This village became a large, multi-tribal community. However, the United States viewed this growth as a threat. In 1811, American forces under William Henry Harrison defeated Tenskwatawa. They destroyed Prophetstown at the Battle of Tippecanoe.

In 1813, Tecumseh led an unsuccessful campaign in Ohio and Indiana. After U.S. naval forces took Lake Erie, he retreated into Upper Canada. There, he faced American troops at the Battle of the Thames.

Tecumseh died in battle on October 5, 1813. His death caused his confederacy to collapse. The lands he defended were eventually ceded to the U.S. government. Despite this loss, his legacy grew significantly. He became a folk hero in American, Indigenous, and Canadian history. He is remembered as a celebrated leader. His life remains a major subject in popular history.
