By 1868, it had become the Großherzoglich Hessische Polytechnische Schule. On October 10, 1877, Louis IV, the Grand Duke of Hesse, elevated the school to the status of a Technische Hochschule zu Darmstadt. 
This elevation changed the university's requirements and academic rights. Students were now required to hold an Abitur, a specific school leaving certificate, for admission. In 1899, the institution received the official right to award doctorates. This was a crucial step in establishing its academic authority. However, the university faced an early crisis regarding its survival. Between 1881 and 1882, low student numbers led to public debates about closing the school. 
To prevent closure, the university made a pioneering decision in the early 1880s. In 1882, it established the first chair in electrical engineering in the world. This was followed in 1883 by the creation of the first faculty of electrical engineering. This faculty was a novelty in the academic world at that time. This bold move allowed Darmstadt to lead in the rapidly growing field of electricity. The decision successfully increased student enrollment and secured the university's future.
As the 20th century progressed, the university expanded its academic scope. New disciplines like paper making and cellulose chemistry were introduced. In 1913, a chair for aeronautics and flight mechanics was established. The university also became highly international. In 1906, three-quarters of the electrical engineering students were from foreign countries, mostly eastern Europe. Following World War I, the university sought to prepare engineers for modern industrial society. In 1924, it divided its non-technical subjects into two distinct departments. These were the Department of Mathematics and Natural Science and the Department of Cultural Studies and Political Science. 
The university faced severe challenges during the mid-20th century. Following the rise of the Nazi regime in 1933, many scholars left the institution. This included Gerhard Herzberg, a future Nobel laureate in chemistry, who was dismissed in 1934. During World War II, the city of Darmstadt suffered a massive bomb attack. On the night of September 11 and 12, 1944, eighty percent of the city was destroyed. This included many university buildings. In 1945, the Allies briefly closed parts of the university by decree. However, the electrical engineering department continued to function under contract with the U.S. Army. 
Post-war reconstruction led to significant growth and structural changes. In 1947, the university hosted the first International Congress on Engineering Education. Participants discussed the moral responsibilities of scientists and committed to peaceful research. During the 1960s, the university expanded to a second campus at Lichtwiese. This site was a former airfield on the outskirts of the city. In 1970, new laws in the state of Hessen gave the university a new structure. This included a presidential statute and unified administration. In 1997, the institution officially changed its name to Technische Universität Darmstadt. This change corrected English-speaking misunderstandings regarding its status. 
Today, TU Darmstadt is a leader in advanced scientific fields. It is located within the IT cluster Rhine-Main-Neckar, often called the "Silicon Valley of Germany." The university hosts the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence and the Hessian Center for Artificial Intelligence. It is also home to the ATHENE-Center, Europe's largest research institute for applied cybersecurity. The university's impact is seen through its successful graduates. These include four Nobel laureates and three Wolf Prize in Physics laureates. 
Notable alumni have achieved great success in various sectors. Peter Grünberg, a Nobel laureate, is one such graduate.
