Heidelberg University is a famous place for learning in Germany. It is a public research university located in the city of Heidelberg. This school is very special because it is the oldest university in Germany. It is also one of the oldest universities still working in the world today.

Learning at the university happens in many different ways. There are twelve different faculties where students can study. These faculties cover about 100 different subjects or disciplines. Students can study for undergraduate degrees or higher levels like doctorates. Most classes are taught in the German language. However, many graduate students can also study in English or French.
The history of the school began a long time ago. In 1386, a leader named Rupert I founded the university. He did this after getting permission from Pope Urban VI. At that time, many teachers had to leave schools in Paris. This gave Heidelberg a great chance to start its own school.
Heidelberg has seen many big changes through the centuries. During the 1600s, wars caused the university to lose its wealth. A famous library called the Bibliotheca Palatina was even stolen. Later, the university became a state-owned institution in 1803.
Today, the university is a global center for science and discovery. About 1,000 students complete their doctorates there every single year. More than one third of these doctoral students come from other countries. In fact, students from 130 different countries study there.
Heidelberg University, officially the Ruprecht Karl University of Heidelberg, is a public research university in Germany. Located in the city of Heidelberg, it is the oldest university in the country. It is also one of the oldest surviving universities in the entire world. The institution is highly prestigious and belongs to several elite academic groups. It is a German Excellence University and a member of the U15 group. It is also a founding member of the Coimbra Group and the League of European Research Universities.
The university operates through twelve distinct faculties. These faculties provide degree programs in approximately 100 different disciplines. Students can pursue studies at undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral levels. While most instruction is in German, many graduate degrees are offered in English or French. The university does not offer departments for business, visual arts, or engineering. However, it does include a program for computer engineering.
The university's history began because of a religious conflict called the Great Schism. In 1378, the Catholic Church elected two different popes. One pope lived in Avignon and the other lived in Rome. German leaders supported the pope in Rome. This caused German students and teachers in Paris to lose their funding. They had to leave Paris and return home. Rupert I, the Count Palatine of the Rhine, saw this opportunity. He worked with Pope Urban VI to establish a new school.
On October 23, 1385, the Pope gave permission to create a school of general studies. Rupert I then made the final decision to found the university on June 26, 1386. The university was modeled after the University of Paris. It originally included four main faculties: philosophy, theology, jurisprudence, and medicine. A special mass was held at the Heiliggeistkirche to bless the school. The first lecture took place on October 19, 1386. Marsilius of Inghen was elected as the first rector.
Throughout the centuries, the university faced many challenges and changes. During the Thirty Years' War, the university lost much of its wealth. In 1622, its famous library, the Bibliotheca Palatina, was stolen and taken to Rome. Later, in 1693, King Louis XIV's troops destroyed much of Heidelberg. The university also changed its religious character over time. It moved from Protestantism to being led by Jesuits. In 1803, the university was reestablished as a state-owned institution by Karl Friedrich, the Grand Duke of Baden.
In the modern era, Heidelberg became a center for new scientific disciplines. Faculty and students helped introduce modern sociology and environmental physics. They also helped establish modern scientific psychiatry and experimental psychology. The university has a very strong connection to global achievement. A total of 33 Nobel Prize winners have been affiliated with the university. The city of Heidelberg itself has been linked to 57 Nobel Prize winners.
The university is a very international place for researchers today. Approximately 1,000 doctorates are completed at the university every year. More than one third of these doctoral students come from outside Germany. Students from about 130 different countries make up more than 20 percent of the student body. This diversity helps the university remain a leader in global research. It continues to influence fields like mathematical statistics and psychiatric genetics.
