Later, they made Process 2. This method was better for theaters. It used two strips of film glued back to back. This made the colors stay in the right place. 
The most famous way was Process 4. This is often called three-strip Technicolor. It used a very large camera.

The company behind these systems, the Technicolor Motion Picture Corporation, became a major force in the film industry. Technicolor is celebrated for creating highly saturated, vibrant colors. This visual style helped define the look of the Golden Age of Hollywood.
The evolution of Technicolor involved several distinct technical stages. The first version, Process 1, was introduced in 1916. It was an additive color process using only two colors: red and green. A prism beam-splitter behind the camera lens exposed two consecutive frames on a single strip of black-and-white film. One frame was captured behind a red filter, and the next behind a green filter. Because it used consecutive frames, the film had to be shot and projected at twice the normal speed. This required special projectors with two lenses and an adjustable prism to align the images. 
To fix the problems of the first process, the company developed Process 2 in 1922. This was a subtractive color process, which meant the colors were physically present in the print. This version did not require special projection equipment. The camera still used a beam-splitter to capture red and green information on black-and-white film. In the lab, these images were toned with complementary colors. The red-filtered images became orange-red, and the green-filtered images became cyan-green. These two thin strips of film were then cemented back-to-back to create a single print. 
Despite its success, Process 2 had significant technical flaws. Because the two images were on different sides of a laminated print, they could not both stay in focus. The films also suffered from a problem called cupping. The intense heat from the projector caused the film to bulge or curve. This cupping could change direction randomly, making the image pop out of focus. Additionally, the layered construction made the prints very easy to scratch. These issues led the company to develop Process 3 in 1928. This process used a dye-transfer technique called dye imbibition to create more stable prints. 
The most famous era of Technicolor began with Process 4, or three-strip Technicolor. This system used a massive camera to capture three separate black-and-white negatives simultaneously. A prism split the light into three colors: red, green, and blue. This method provided the full spectrum of color seen in classic cinema. It was widely used from the early 1930s until the mid-1950s. During this time, the three-strip camera was eventually replaced by standard cameras using single-strip "monopack" color negative film. 
The history of the company is tied to its founders, Herbert Kalmus and Daniel Frost Comstock. Both men earned degrees from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In 1912, they formed a research firm with mechanic W. Burton Wescott. They were inspired by the science of filmmaking while analyzing a flicker-free motion picture system. Technicolor was founded in Boston in 1914 and incorporated in Maine in 1915. The company's name even took its "Tech" prefix from the university they attended. 
Technicolor's impact is visible in some of the most important films in history. The three-strip process was used for famous musicals like *The Wizard of Oz* (1939) and *Meet Me in St. Louis* (1944). It was also essential for animated classics like *Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs* (1937) and *Pinocchio* (1940). Even dramatic films like *Gone with the Wind* (1939) and *The Adventures of Robin Hood* (1938) relied on its vivid colors. Later, the company even experimented with video technology. Their Vidtronics division worked on transferring videotape to film for theatrical distribution in the 1970s.
