Tawaraya Sōtatsu was a great Japanese painter. He also designed furniture. He helped start the Rinpa school. This was a group of artists. They were all influenced by his work.

Sōtatsu had a special way to paint. He used a method called tarashikomi. This means he put a second layer of paint on the first layer while it was still wet. This made beautiful effects. One example is his work called Dragons and Clouds.

Sōtatsu worked closely with a friend named Hon'ami Kōetsu. They made many things together. They made decorated books and paper. They also made long scrolls. One scroll shows silver and gold deer. Another scroll shows many cranes. They used gold and silver to make the art shine.

He also made large folding screens. These are called byōbu. His Wind God and Thunder God screens are National Treasures. This means they are very special to Japan. Sōtatsu was a very skilled artist. His work is still famous today.
