The Taung Child is a very famous fossilized skull.

It belonged to a young creature called Australopithecus africanus. This find was a huge deal for science. It was one of the first early human-like fossils found in Africa. It gave us the first proof that humans likely started on that continent. A specialist named Dean Falk called it a very important fossil of the twentieth century. It helps us understand how our own history began long ago.

Scientists look closely at the skull to see how it works. The skull has a brain size of 400 to 500 cc. This is about the same size as a modern adult chimpanzee. The skull also has a rising forehead and round eye sockets. These are features that look more like humans than apes. The face is shorter than an ape face, which is a human-like trait. However, the lower part of the nose looks more like a chimpanzee.

The child was likely three or four years old when it died.

This discovery happened in 1924 at the Buxton Limeworks near Taung, South Africa.

Workers in a limestone quarry found the skull. A man named Pat Izod first showed it to a friend named Josephine Salmons. She realized it was important and gave it to Raymond Dart. Dart was an anatomist at the University of Witwatersrand. He named the new species in 1925. He called it a "man-ape" to show it had human features. He published his findings in a journal called Nature on February 7, 1925.

Not everyone believed Raymond Dart at first. Many experts thought the skull was just an ape. Some scientists, like Sir Arthur Keith, were very skeptical. They thought humans evolved in Asia rather than in Africa. Other experts were confused by the small brain size. At that time, people thought human ancestors had large brains very early on. There was also a famous hoax called the Piltdown Man that misled scientists. Some people even argued against the find because of their religious beliefs.

It took many years for the scientific world to change its mind.

Eventually, more evidence proved that Dart was correct. A Scottish doctor named Robert Broom helped prove this. He became a professional paleontologist in 1933. Broom found more fossils of Australopithecus africanus in South Africa. These new fossils showed that the species had human-like features. His work helped everyone accept that these creatures were part of our family tree. We can also look at the skull to see how the child died. In 2006, Lee Berger suggested a large bird like an eagle might have killed it. This idea came from marks found on the skull and eye sockets.
