The word tariqa means "way" or "path." This path helps people seek the ultimate truth.

Each tariqa has a leader. This leader is called a murshid or a guide. The followers are called murids. This name means they desire to know and love God. Most groups have a chain of leaders. This chain connects them back to the prophet Muhammad. One group, the Naqshbandi, traces its roots to Abu Bakr instead.

Members follow special steps to grow. They may say daily prayers called awrad. These can be very long. Some people repeat a prayer many times to move up in rank. In some groups, a student might repeat a prayer 82,000 times!

These groups have spread all over the world. They helped Islam reach Africa, Asia, and China. Many orders exist, like the Mevlevi or the Qadiri. People can even join more than one group at once. This helps them share many traditions.
