Many people call them water bears. Others call them moss piglets. These animals are very small. Most are only 0.5 millimeters long. They have a short, plump body. They use four pairs of legs to move. These legs have claws or sticky pads.

Tardigrades are famous for being very tough. They can live in many places. Some live on high mountains. Others live in the deep sea. They can even survive in outer space! When it gets too dry, they go into a special state. This is called cryptobiosis. They curl into a tiny ball called a tun.

In this tun state, they do not need food. They do not need water for years. They can also survive extreme heat or cold. They can live without oxygen. Special proteins in their bodies help protect them. These proteins act like a glass layer. This layer keeps their insides safe while they are dry.
