The nation shares borders with many neighbors. Uganda lies to the northwest, while Kenya is to the northeast. The Indian Ocean borders the eastern coast. To the south, Tanzania meets Mozambique and Malawi. Zambia is located to the southwest. To the west, it is bordered by Rwanda, Burundi, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. As of 2024, the population is estimated at 67.5 million people. This makes it the most populous country located entirely south of the equator.

The name Tanzania is a combination of two names. It is a clipped compound of Tanganyika and Zanzibar. In 1964, these two entities merged to form the unified republic. A man named Mohammed Iqbal Dar won a contest to name the new country. He took "Tan" and "zan" from the original states. He added "i" from his own name. He also added "a" as a reference to Ahmadiyya. The name Tanganyika comes from Swahili words. "Tanga" means sail and "nyika" means uninhabited plain or wilderness. This creates the phrase "sail in the wilderness." The name Zanzibar comes from Zanj, a name for local people. It also uses the Arabic word "barr," which means coast or shore.

Tanzania is one of the oldest continuously inhabited places on Earth. Many important hominid fossils have been found here.

The Olduvai Gorge is a famous site in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This gorge contains tool remnants that show how early technology developed. Early migrations brought many different groups to the land. Southern Cushitic speakers moved south from Ethiopia and Somalia. Eastern Cushitic people moved from north of Lake Turkana about 2,000 to 4,000 years ago. Southern Nilotes, such as the Datoog, arrived between 2,900 and 2,400 years ago. At the same time, Mashariki Bantu people settled near Lake Victoria and Lake Tanganyika. These Bantu groups brought planting traditions and yams from West Africa.

Ancient Tanzanian people were very skilled at working with metal. The Pare people produced iron for those in the northeast mountains. The Haya people lived on the western shores of Lake Victoria. More than 1,500 years ago, they invented a high-heat blast furnace. This allowed them to forge carbon steel at temperatures over 1,820 °C. Along the coast, trade grew through the first millennium. Merchants from the Persian Gulf and India visited these shores. Islam was practiced on the Swahili Coast by the eighth or ninth century. By the 10th century, Zanzibar was a central Swahili trading town. The city-state of Kilwa became a major power in East Africa. It grew wealthy by controlling gold trade from southern regions.

The history of the region changed during the colonial era. In the late 19th century, Germany ruled the mainland as German East Africa. This period included the Maji Maji Rebellion from 1905 to 1907. This was an uprising against colonial authorities regarding forced labor. The conflict and resulting famine caused 300,000 deaths. After World War I, Britain took control of the mainland. The territory was then called Tanganyika. Zanzibar remained a separate colonial jurisdiction until 1963. The two parts finally joined in 1964.
