Human history in this region began thousands of years ago. Early hunter-gatherers settled the territory during the Stone and Iron Ages. These inhabitants were the ancestors of the Twa, who are forest-dwelling foragers.

Later, Bantu groups migrated into the area and cleared forests for agriculture. By the 15th century, various clans began merging into kingdoms. King Gihanga established the Kingdom of Rwanda by incorporating neighboring territories. Eventually, the Tutsi Nyiginya clan became the dominant ruling group.

Colonialism significantly altered the social and political structure of Rwanda. Germany colonized the territory in 1897 as part of German East Africa. Belgium took control in 1916 during World War I. Both European powers supported a policy of Tutsi supremacy. In 1935, Belgium introduced identity cards to label citizens as Hutu, Tutsi, Twa, or Naturalized. This system prevented people from moving between social classes. Tensions grew, leading to the 1959 Rwandan Revolution. Rwanda eventually gained independence as a Hutu-dominated republic on July 1, 1962.

The country experienced extreme violence and instability in the late 20th century. In 1990, the Tutsi-led Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF) launched a civil war. In April 1994, President Juvénal Habyarimana was assassinated when his plane was shot down. This event triggered the Rwandan genocide. Hutu Power extremists carried out well-planned attacks against Tutsis and moderate Hutus. Between 500,000 and 1,000,000 people were killed in approximately 100 days.
