Tanta is a major city located in the heart of the Nile Delta in northern Egypt. It serves as the capital of the Gharbia Governorate. The city holds a central position between Egypt's largest urban centers. It sits north of Cairo and southeast of Alexandria. In 2024, the population reached approximately 530,000 people. This makes Tanta the seventh most populous city in the country. The city is a vital commercial hub and a significant cultural center for the region.

The geography of Tanta is defined by the fertile land of the Nile Delta. The soil here is black and alluvial. This type of soil is formed from Nile silt deposited over many years. This rich ground makes the surrounding area excellent for agriculture. The city is bordered by water features including the Qasr Drain to the north and east. The Tanta Canal runs along the western and southern edges.

The city's core sits about three meters higher than the surrounding farmland. This elevation exists because the old center was built upon ancient mounds.

Tanta is a powerhouse for several different industries. It is a primary center for the cotton-ginning industry. This involves the process of separating cotton fibers from their seeds. The city also produces oil, soap, flax, and various textiles. Beyond manufacturing, Tanta is famous for its food production. It is well known for its sweet shops and snack industry. Local specialties include roasted chickpeas and a confection known as Hab El-Aziz.

A major railway line passes through the city, which helps connect these industries to the rest of Egypt.

The history of the area stretches back to the Late Period of ancient Egypt. Archaeological evidence suggests people lived here during the 26th Dynasty. A red granite block was discovered near the Ahmad al-Badawi Mosque. This block bears the name of Pharaoh Ahmose II, who ruled from 570 to 526 BCE. The settlement may have been called *Tanasu* or *Tanaso* in ancient times. Over many centuries, the name changed frequently. Greek sources called it "Tanitad" in the 4th century BCE. During the Roman period, it was known as "Tantathna."

In the 13th century, the city's importance grew due to the arrival of Ahmad al-Badawi. He was a Sufi figure who settled in the area around 634–637 AH. His annual birthday festival turned Tanta into a massive commercial hub. This event attracted local rulers and the Badawiyyah Sufi order. The Ahmad al-Badawi Mosque remains the city's most significant religious monument.

Later, Ali Bey al-Kabir helped develop the city further. He built commercial infrastructure like shops and caravanserais. This allowed goods like Indian textiles and Yemeni coffee to reach local markets.

Tanta has experienced several periods of intense urban growth and political change. During the 19th century, the cotton export boom attracted many migrants. People from the Levant, Italy, France, Britain, and Greece moved to the city. Under Khedive Ismail, the city underwent modern development. New avenues were built, and the city grew to about 180 feddans.

The city also saw significant political activity during the 1919 Revolution and the 1935 protests. In 1960, the city expanded by absorbing the villages of Qaffaha and Kafr Sejer. Between 1947 and 1976, a large wave of migration caused even more urban expansion.

Today, Tanta is a center for higher education and modern life. It hosts Tanta University and a branch of Al-Azhar University. These institutions offer many different academic disciplines to students. The city also contains the historic Ahmadi Mosque, which is a center for Islamic scholarship.
