Safety and environmental protection are critical in modern tanker operations. Tighter regulations have significantly reduced the number of environmental disasters. In 1979, there were 92 incidents involving oil spills totaling 636,000 tonnes. By 2020, this fell to just three incidents totaling roughly 1,000 tonnes. 
Global shipping is a massive, interconnected system involving many nations. As of 2005, Panama was the leading flag state with 592 registered tankers. Other major flag states include Liberia, the Marshall Islands, and Singapore. The ownership of these fleets is also concentrated in specific regions. Greece, Japan, and the United States are the top three owners. Together, these three nations account for over 36% of the world's tanker fleet. Most of these ships are constructed in Asia, with South Korea, Japan, and China building over 70% of the world's tankers.
