This happens when magnesium-rich minerals like serpentine, pyroxene, or olivine react with water and carbon dioxide. Another method involves the reaction between dolomite and silica during contact metamorphism. Talc can also form from magnesium chlorite and quartz in specific high-pressure environments. In some cases, it forms in sedimentary rocks through the transformation of precursors like kerolite or sepiolite. These minerals precipitate from marine or lake water under specific conditions.

Geologists find talc in many different types of rock formations. It is a common component of metamorphic belts that contain ultramafic rocks. A rock composed predominantly of talc is known as soapstone, or steatite. Talc is also found in whiteschist, which is a white, fibrous rock. These rocks are common in the Franciscan Metamorphic Belt in the United States. They are also found in the European Alps and the Himalayas.

In medicine, sterile talc is used as a sclerosing agent for pleurodesis. This procedure helps prevent fluid from collecting around the lungs.

However, health organizations like the American Academy of Pediatrics advise caution. Inhaling fine talcum powder particles can lead to respiratory problems and lung damage.

Beyond traditional uses, talc shows great promise in sustainable technology. Scientists are researching the use of magnesium silicate as a substitute for ordinary Portland cement. This process is much less energy-intensive than making traditional cement. While producing Portland cement requires heating limestone to 1,500 °C, talc only requires about 650 °C. Furthermore, talc can actually help the environment by absorbing carbon dioxide. As it hardens, it removes 0.6 tonnes of CO2 per tonne used. This creates a negative carbon footprint, whereas conventional cement produces 0.4 tonnes of CO2 per tonne.
