In Japan, he is a famous television host. Internationally, he is highly regarded for his cinematic work. He is often called the successor to the legendary director Akira Kurosawa. His art often blends a bleak worldview with humor and affection for his characters.

Kitano's career began in the comedy clubs of Tokyo. He worked at the Asakusa France-za strip theater. There, he served as an elevator operator and an apprentice. Eventually, he became the theater's MC. In 1973, he formed a comedy duo with Kiyoshi Kaneko. They called themselves Two Beat. They used the stage names Beat Takeshi and Beat Kiyoshi. They practiced manzai, a style of comedy involving fast, back-and-forth banter. In manzai, one performer is the boke, or funny man. The other is the tsukkomi, or straight man. Kitano's material was often risqué and controversial. This led to censorship and even a five-year ban from NHK studios.

Kitano became a massive television star during the 1980s. His show Oretachi Hyōkin-zoku reached a 29.1% viewership rating. His game show, Takeshi's Castle, reached a 24.7% rating. This show featured slapstick physical contests. It became famous in the United States as Most Extreme Elimination Challenge. Kitano is considered one of the "Big Three" television comedians in Japan. He also ventured into video games. In 1986, he consulted on the game Takeshi no Chōsenjō. The game was famously difficult and was ranked as a "kusoge," or bad game, by Famitsu magazine.

His transition to serious acting and directing changed his career. He first gained recognition in the 1983 film Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence. He was a tough sergeant in this film. He later made his directorial debut with Violent Cop in 1989. He took this role after director Kinji Fukasaku stepped down. Kitano rewrote the script heavily. This marked his start as a filmmaker. He often directs stories about the police or yakuza gangsters. His style is very specific and unique.

Kitano's filmmaking style is characterized by several technical choices. He uses a deadpan acting style, where actors remain very calm. He also utilizes a camera style that approaches near-stasis. This means the camera stays very still. He frequently employs long takes where very little happens. He also uses editing that cuts immediately to the aftermath of an event. These techniques help define his idiosyncratic cinematic voice. His films often explore dark or serious themes through these methods.

In 1994, Kitano experienced a life-changing event. He was involved in a motorscooter accident. This accident caused partial paralysis on the right side of his face. Following this, he began a new artistic pursuit: painting. His paintings have been shown in galleries. They have also appeared on the covers of movie soundtracks. His artwork was even featured in his own films.

This made him only the third Japanese director to receive this honor. He followed in the footsteps of Akira Kurosawa and Hiroshi Inagaki. This victory was significant for his reputation. Before this, many in Japan viewed his films as a hobby for a comedian. The award proved he was a serious director.
