He grew up in a large, middle-class Muslim family. He was the oldest of nine children. His parents were Maulavi Muhammad Yasin Khan and Meherunnesa Khanam. Growing up, Tajuddin saw many hard things happen in his home region. Bengal faced many problems like famines and political unrest. These events made him interested in politics at a very young age.

Tajuddin was a very bright student who loved to learn. He went to Saint Gregory's High School in Dhaka. In 1944, he finished his studies there with a very high score. He later went to Dhaka College and the University of Dhaka. At the university, he studied economics and law.

Even though he was a student, he spent much time on political work. This work sometimes made it hard for him to finish his classes on time. He eventually passed his exams with high honors in East Bengal. He also had to take over many duties for his family after his father died.

His political journey began with a group called the Muslim League. He joined this group in 1943 while he was still in school. Tajuddin worked with a group of young people who wanted new ideas. They had an office at 150 Moghultuli Lane in Dhaka. This group was different from the older leaders in the party.

They wanted more fairness and better ways to help regular people. In 1947, the land was divided into two parts called India and Pakistan. This change was a very difficult and sad time for many people. Tajuddin stayed active in politics even as the world around him changed.

Tajuddin played a huge role in the Language Movement of 1952. This happened because leaders wanted Urdu to be the only official language. People in East Bengal wanted to keep their Bengali language. Tajuddin was a member of a group that fought for Bengali rights.

In 1971, a war for independence began in Bangladesh. Because of the fighting, Tajuddin had to move to India. While there, he set up the first government for Bangladesh. He served as the very first prime minister of the new nation.
