The Taj Mahal is an ivory-white marble mausoleum located in Agra, India.

It sits on the right bank of the Yamuna River. This massive structure serves as a tomb for Mumtaz Mahal and her husband, the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan. The name "Taj Mahal" comes from Urdu and is believed to derive from Arabic and Persian. It likely means "crown palace."

The site is more than just a single building. It is a large complex that includes a mosque and a guest house. These structures are set within formal gardens and are bounded by a crenellated wall. Today, the Taj Mahal is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is considered a masterpiece of Indo-Islamic and Mughal architecture.

The construction of the complex followed a very specific design process. The central mausoleum is built of white marble inlaid with semi-precious stones. Other buildings in the complex use red sandstone, which was common in the Mughal era.

The entire complex sits on a large platform. This platform is decorated with dark and light colored sandstone patterns. The mausoleum itself is an eight-sided structure. It features large arched doorways called iwans. These iwans are topped by a large, onion-shaped dome. To decorate the surfaces, artisans used a technique called pietra dura. This involves inlaying stylized geometric patterns of vines, flowers, and fruits into the marble. They also used calligraphy, which is decorative writing, to adorn the gateway arches.

The architecture relies heavily on symmetry and specific geometric shapes. The main dome is the most prominent feature of the building. It sits on a high cylindrical drum and is topped by a gilded finial. This finial is decorated with a moon, a typical Islamic motif. Four smaller domes, known as chattris, surround the main dome at the corners. These smaller domes help bring light into the interior of the building.

At the corners of the main platform, there are four tall minarets. Each minaret is more than 40 meters tall. These towers were built to lean slightly outward. This design ensures that if they ever collapsed, they would fall away from the tomb. The interior of the main chamber is also an octagon. It features intricate jali windows, which are lattice screens with hexagonal patterns. These screens allow light and air to pass through the building.

The history of the Taj Mahal began with a story of great loss. In 1631, Mumtaz Mahal died while giving birth to the fourteenth child of Shah Jahan. The emperor was deeply affected by her death. Historians note that he avoided royal affairs and stopped listening to music for two years.

To honor her, he commissioned this grand tomb in 1632. Construction of the mausoleum was completed in 1648. However, the entire complex was not finished until 1653. The project was a massive undertaking that required a huge amount of money. At the time, the cost was estimated at 32 million rupees. In 2015, this value would be approximately 52.8 billion rupees.

Building such a complex required a massive, international team of experts. More than 20,000 workers and artisans were employed for the project. A board of architects led the work, headed by the court architect Ustad Ahmad Lahori. The team included specialists from many different cultures. For example, Ismail Afandi was an Ottoman designer of domes. Ustad Isa and Isa Muhammad Effendi were Persian architects. The chief calligrapher was Amanat Khan Shirazi, who also wrote inscriptions inside the dome.

Other experts included Qazim Khan, who cast the finials, and several masonry supervisors. This mix of skills helped create the unique blend of styles seen in the building.

The Taj Mahal remains a significant cultural and historical landmark. It is a Monument of National Importance in India. In 2007, it was named a winner of the New 7 Wonders of the World initiative. The site is also a major global tourist destination. It attracts more than five million visitors every year.

The building serves as a symbol of Indian history and a jewel of Islamic art. Its design was inspired by earlier structures like the Gur-e Amir in Samarkand and Humayun's Tomb in Delhi. These influences helped shape the gardens and the layout of the site.

The Taj Mahal connects many different fields of human achievement. It combines advanced engineering with fine art and religious expression. The use of symmetry and mathematical precision shows a deep understanding of geometry. The calligraphy on the walls includes passages from the Qur'an, linking the art to spiritual beliefs. Even the way the light enters through the jali screens shows a careful connection between architecture and nature. By bringing together architects, calligraphers, and stone workers, the Taj Mahal stands as a complete example of Mughal design. It remains one of the most admired masterpieces of world heritage.
