Long ago, a group of mammals called taeniodonts lived. 

These animals had very special teeth. Their teeth grew all the time. This helped them eat tough plants. Some had teeth that worked like chisels. They had hard enamel on the outside of the tooth. This made the teeth stay sharp as they wore down.
Taeniodonts also had strong bodies. They had big claws on their feet. They used these claws to dig in the dirt. 
Later on, other mammals appeared. These new animals were faster and smarter. They could also dig and smell well. Because of this, the taeniodonts eventually disappeared.
Taeniodonts were a group of extinct mammals. Their name means "banded teeth." 

These animals had a very special way of eating. Many had teeth that never stopped growing. This helped them eat tough plants without wearing their teeth down. The Stylinodont family had teeth that worked like chisels. They had hard enamel only on the outside of their front teeth. As they chewed, the softer parts wore away faster. This left the hard enamel edges very sharp. It is a way of self-sharpening. This is similar to how modern rodents use their teeth. 
Scientists study these animals through fossils. They look at bones to learn how they lived. A study from 2022 by Bertrand and Shelley helped identify them. They found that taeniodonts are basal placental mammals. This means they are not closely related to any animals alive today. They were also part of an early group of mammals. They lived in a hothouse world with very warm environments. 
We know many specific details from their remains. One animal named Onychodectes tisonensis had a very interesting brain. Its brain was flat and did not have many folds. This suggests it had limited intelligence. However, it had huge olfactory bulbs. These are the parts of the brain used for smelling. This means they likely relied on smell to find food. Some taeniodonts weighed as little as 5 kilograms. Larger ones could weigh up to 110 kilograms. 
Taeniodonts were masters of digging and rooting. They had large claws on their middle toes. Their forelimbs were built for strong digging work. They may have been the first mammals to live in upland areas. They looked for hard fruits and plants there. Eventually, they disappeared from the fossil record. This happened when the first pig-like animals appeared. These new animals were faster and smarter. They could also grind their food more easily.

They had huge, compressed, and recurved claws on their middle toes. Their forelimbs were adapted for digging. Later genera, such as Stylinodon, possessed teeth that grew continuously. 
The feeding mechanism of stylinodonts was very unique. Their faces were unusually short. They had massive jaws and large attachments on the skull for chewing muscles. Their front teeth were curved and ever-growing. These teeth had enamel only on the outside surface. Because enamel is harder than the rest of the tooth, the tooth wears at an angle. This creates a battery of self-sharpening chisels. Modern rodents use a similar method. However, stylinodonts used their canines instead of incisors to achieve this. 
Their rear teeth were also specialized. These molars became ever-growing pegs. The enamel was restricted to bands on the sides of the tooth. While root hypsodont molars are usually for hard vegetable food, enamel loss makes the tooth softer. Stylinodont molars could crush food but could not grind it. They did not use high-pressure chewing at the back of the mouth like modern horses or elephants. Instead, they moved more of their chewing power to the front teeth. 
We can learn about their behavior from their anatomy. A preserved braincase of Onychodectes tisonensis shows a flat cerebrum. The cerebrum is the part of the brain used for higher functions. It lacked convolutions, which suggests limited intelligence. However, they had very large olfactory bulbs. These are the parts of the brain used for smelling. This suggests taeniodonts relied heavily on their sense of smell. Their forelimb adaptations also prove they were strong diggers. 
Taeniodonts were likely basal placental mammals. A 2022 study by Bertrand and Shelley suggests they are not closely related to any living family. They may have been among the first specialist mammals in upland areas. They likely sought hard-coated plants and fruits in hothouse environments. Eventually, they disappeared from the fossil record. This coincided with the appearance of the first pig-like artiodactyls. These new mammals were faster and more intelligent. They could also grind food more effectively, which may have led to the extinction of the taeniodonts.
