The T-34 was a Soviet medium tank used during World War II.

It was a revolutionary vehicle that changed how armored warfare worked. The tank was famous for its combination of firepower and protection. It also became a symbol of Soviet industrial strength. The T-34 served as the mainstay for the Soviet Red Army throughout the war. It played a critical role in deep battle strategies. This strategy used mechanized divisions to strike deep into enemy lines.

The tank's effectiveness came from several specific engineering choices. One major feature was its 60-degree sloped armor. Instead of being flat, the metal plates were tilted at an angle. This design helped deflect incoming anti-tank rounds away from the hull.

The T-34 also used a Model V-2-34 diesel engine. This V12 engine ran on diesel fuel, which is less flammable than petrol. This made the tank safer when it was hit in combat. The original version used a 76.2 mm tank gun. This gun was more powerful than many other tanks used at the time.

Before the T-34, the Soviet Union relied on different types of tanks. The T-26 was an infantry tank that moved slowly to keep pace with soldiers. The BT series were fast cavalry tanks designed for maneuver warfare.

In 1937, engineer Mikhail Koshkin led a team to design a replacement. They first created the A-20 prototype. The A-20 featured a 45 mm gun and a diesel engine. Later, they developed the A-32 prototype. The A-32 was a heavier "universal tank" with 45 mm of frontal armor. The A-32 proved it could be just as mobile as the lighter A-20. This led to the official approval of the T-34 production model.

Designing the T-34 involved learning from past mistakes. During battles at Lake Khasan and Khalkhin Gol, Soviet tanks faced problems. Earlier models used petrol engines that often burst into flames when hit.

Also, many tanks used rivets to hold armor together. When shells hit these rivets, they could break off and fly inside the tank like projectiles. The T-34 addressed these issues with better welding and sloped armor. Koshkin chose the name T-34 to honor the year 1934. This was the year he began his new tank ideas. Sadly, Koshkin died of pneumonia during a long test drive to Moscow.

Production of the T-34 was a massive industrial effort. The Soviets built over 80,000 T-34s of all variants.

This allowed the Red Army to field much larger forces than the German Wehrmacht. However, the tank also suffered the highest losses of any tank. About 44,900 T-34s were lost or damaged during the war. When Germany invaded in 1941, factories had to be moved east. They relocated to the Ural Mountains to stay safe from German advances. Some factories, like the Stalingrad Tractor Factory, worked through heavy fighting. They produced 40% of all T-34s during a very difficult period.

Engineers constantly worked to make the T-34 better and cheaper. They refined production methods to meet the needs of the Eastern Front. For example, they developed new ways to weld and harden armor plates. One designer, Professor Evgeny Paton, worked on automated welding. They also simplified parts to save time. The design of the 76.2 mm F-34 gun was reduced from 861 parts to 614 parts. In early 1944, the Soviets introduced the T-34-85. This variant featured a much larger and more powerful gun. This upgrade helped the tank stay effective as the war continued.

The T-34 had a lasting impact on the history of technology. Its design led directly to the T-44 and the T-54 and T-55 series. These later tanks became the armored core for many modern armies.

The T-34 was the most-produced tank of World War II. It is also the second most-produced tank of all time. Many T-34s were exported to other countries after the war. They were used in various conflicts around the world. Even as recently as 2023, more than 90 T-34s were still in service. It remains one of the most influential military machines ever built.
