This allowed them to have more tanks than their enemies. However, the tank also suffered many heavy losses. About 44,900 T-34s were lost or damaged in war. Factories had to move far east to the Ural Mountains. This move happened because of the German invasion. Workers kept making tanks even during hard battles.

You can see how the T-34 led to newer machines. Its design helped create the T-44 and the T-54 series. These newer tanks became the core of modern armies. Even after the war, many T-34s were sent to other lands. Some were used in places like Korea and Cuba.

Designing the T-34 involved learning from past mistakes. During battles at Lake Khasan and Khalkhin Gol, Soviet tanks faced problems. Earlier models used petrol engines that often burst into flames when hit.

Also, many tanks used rivets to hold armor together. When shells hit these rivets, they could break off and fly inside the tank like projectiles. The T-34 addressed these issues with better welding and sloped armor. Koshkin chose the name T-34 to honor the year 1934. This was the year he began his new tank ideas. This allowed the Red Army to field much larger forces than the German Wehrmacht. However, the tank also suffered the highest losses of any tank. About 44,900 T-34s were lost or damaged during the war. When Germany invaded in 1941, factories had to be moved east. They relocated to the Ural Mountains to stay safe from German advances. Some factories, like the Stalingrad Tractor Factory, worked through heavy fighting. They produced 40% of all T-34s during a very difficult period.

Engineers constantly worked to make the T-34 better and cheaper. They refined production methods to meet the needs of the Eastern Front. For example, they developed new ways to weld and harden armor plates. One designer, Professor Evgeny Paton, worked on automated welding. They also simplified parts to save time. The design of the 76.2 mm F-34 gun was reduced from 861 parts to 614 parts. In early 1944, the Soviets introduced the T-34-85. This variant featured a much larger and more powerful gun. This upgrade helped the tank stay effective as the war continued.

The T-34 had a lasting impact on the history of technology. Its design led directly to the T-44 and the T-54 and T-55 series. These later tanks became the armored core for many modern armies.

The T-34 was the most-produced tank of World War II. It is also the second most-produced tank of all time. Many T-34s were exported to other countries after the war.
