Sylvester Roper was a famous inventor from America. He lived in Boston, Massachusetts. He loved to build machines. 
As a young boy, he showed great talent. At age 12, he made a steam engine. At age 14, he built a locomotive engine. A locomotive is a powerful engine used for trains.
Later, he built very early cars. In 1863, he made a steam carriage. He also made a steam velocipede. This machine may have been the first motorcycle. Because of this work, he is in the Motorcycle Hall of Fame. 
Roper also made many other things. He invented a sewing machine. He made parts for guns, too. He invented a shotgun choke. This is a small tube that fits on a gun barrel. It helps change how the shot spreads.
In 1896, Roper was riding a steam-powered bike. He was riding near a track in Cambridge. He fell from the bike and died. Doctors found his heart had failed. He was a true pioneer of new machines.

He also worked on a repeating shotgun mechanism. He received a patent for this with Christopher Miner Spencer in 1882. Later, in 1885, he got a patent for a loading mechanism. In 1896, Roper was riding a steam-powered bicycle. He was near the Charles River in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He was riding on a bicycle track near Harvard Bridge. He was pacing professional bicyclists like Tom Butler. Roper was very fast on his machine. He finished a flying mile in 2 minutes 1.4 seconds. During the ride, he fell and suffered a head wound. He died on June 1, 1896. An autopsy showed his cause of death was heart failure.

This machine was a Pope Manufacturing Company Columbia bicycle that had a steam engine added to it. He rode it on a bicycle track near the Harvard Bridge. He was seen pacing professional bicyclists, including a rider named Tom Butler. Roper was quite fast on his machine. He was clocked at 2 minutes 1.4 seconds for a flying mile. 
While riding on the track, Roper experienced an accident. He appeared to be unstable and fell, resulting in a head wound. He was found dead at the scene. An autopsy was performed to determine the cause of his death. The results showed that he had suffered from heart failure. It is not known if the stress of the crash caused the heart failure, or if his heart failed just before the crash occurred. Despite his sudden death, his legacy remains in the history of transportation and mechanical engineering.
