This dark color helps them mimic the pipevine swallowtail, which is distasteful. This mimicry is controlled by a single gene that affects dopamine levels. The butterfly's appearance changes to match the local distasteful species in its area.
Swallowtails are found in diverse environments across the globe. Most diversity is located between 20°N and 20°S in the tropics. However, they can also live in very cold regions. The Siberian Apollo, Parnassius arcticus, lives north of the Arctic Circle. It can be found at altitudes of 1,500 meters in northeastern Yakutia. Whether in a tropical forest or a high mountain, swallowtails play a major role in their ecosystems.
