It is about making sure the world stays healthy for people in the future.

Many people think of three main parts. These are the environment, society, and the economy.

The environment includes nature and plants. Society is about how people live together. The economy is about how we use money and resources. These three parts must work together.

In 1987, a big report helped explain this idea. It said we must meet our own needs now. We must not make it hard for future children to meet their needs later. This is often called sustainable development.

There are many ways to help. Businesses can try to be more green. Leaders can make new rules. Even you can make good choices.

The United Nations has 17 goals to help the world. These goals aim to balance the three parts of our world. This helps everyone live well for a very long time.

The word comes from the Latin word "sustinere." This means to hold up or to support. Today, we use it to talk about our world. We want to make sure our environment, our money systems, and our societies all last. It is a way to look at the future. We want to make sure we do not run out of what we need.

Many experts say there are three main parts to this idea. These are often called the three pillars or dimensions. The first part is the environment, which includes nature and plants. The second part is the economy, which is how we use money and resources. The third part is society, which is how people live together.

These three parts must work well together. Some people say the environment is the most important base. Without a healthy planet, the other two parts cannot exist.

People have thought about these ideas for a long time. Long ago, a man named Hans Carl von Carlowitz wrote about forests. He lived from 1645 to 1714. He wanted to make sure people could use wood forever. He suggested planting new trees to replace the ones we cut down. In 1987, a group called the Brundtland Commission wrote a famous report. This report was called "Our Common Future." It helped the whole world understand how to grow in a smart way.

Sustainable development has very specific goals. The Brundtland Report said we must meet our needs today. We must do this without hurting the needs of people in the future. This is a way of being fair to children not yet born. The United Nations has even made 17 goals to help us. These are called the Sustainable Development Goals. They include 169 different targets to reach. These goals help balance the economy, society, and the environment.

Achieving this can be a hard job for everyone. It is difficult to measure exactly how sustainable a country is. Some people use labels like "Fairtrade" or "Organic" to show they are being careful. Businesses can try to grow without hurting nature. This is called decoupling, where we grow the economy but use fewer resources. Even individuals can make choices to help.

Sustainability is the capacity to maintain or improve certain conditions over a long period of time. In modern usage, it refers to a state where the environment, economy, and society can all exist long-term. This concept is considered a normative concept. This means it is based on what people value or find desirable for the future. It connects scientific study to human goals.

Scientists and leaders use it to guide decisions at many levels. These levels include global, national, organizational, and individual scales.

Scholars often describe sustainability through three distinct dimensions. These are the environmental, social, and economic dimensions. Some experts call these the three pillars or components.

A popular way to see this is through a Venn diagram. This shows sustainability as the area where all three circles overlap. Another model uses nested ellipses. This shows that the economy and society are constrained by environmental limits.

This means nature provides the foundation for everything else. The "wedding cake" model also shows the environment as the base for society and the economy.

Sustainable development is a closely related concept. While people often use the terms interchangeably, there is a subtle difference. Sustainability is a broad, general concept. Sustainable development is a policy or organizing principle used to reach that goal. It has two main objectives. It aims to meet human development goals. It also aims to help natural systems provide resources for society. This includes providing ecosystem services that economies need to function.

The history of these ideas stretches back centuries. The word comes from the Latin "sustinere," meaning to hold up or endure. In the early 1700s, Hans Carl von Carlowitz applied these ideas to forestry. He wrote about the need for continuous, sustainable use of timber. He argued for the conservation and replanting of trees. In 1987, the UN Commission on Environment and Development released the Brundtland Report. This report was titled "Our Common Future." It popularized the term sustainable development. It defined it as development that meets present needs without compromising future generations.

Measuring sustainability is a complex and dynamic challenge. There is no single fixed definition for sustainability indicators. Instead, metrics are constantly evolving. They include benchmarks, audits, and certification systems. For example, Fairtrade and Organic are types of sustainability standards. Organizations also use triple Bottom Line accounting to report their impact. Some groups aim for decoupling. This is the process of separating economic growth from environmental harm. It involves using fewer resources per unit of output to reduce pollution.

Many barriers prevent a full sustainability transition. Some barriers are natural due to the complexity of the world. Others are extrinsic, such as dominant institutional frameworks in different countries. Global issues are especially hard to solve. They require global solutions, but organizations like the UN and WTO can be inefficient. This is often due to a lack of suitable sanctioning mechanisms. Despite this, many groups are taking action. Business groups seek sustainable business practices. Religious leaders stress the importance of environmental stability. Individuals also make choices to live more sustainably.

Critics have raised several points regarding the concept. Some argue that sustainability is a vague buzzword. Others believe that achieving total sustainability might be an impossible goal. Some experts note that no country currently meets its citizens' needs without crossing planetary boundaries. These boundaries represent the physical limits of our planet.

Even with these challenges, the concept remains a vital guide. It connects to ideas like resilience, adaptive capacity, and vulnerability. It reminds us that choices matter because we cannot sustain everything, everywhere, forever.
