A suspension bridge is a special type of bridge. It hangs from strong cables.

Most modern bridges use two tall towers. Two big cables stretch between these towers. These main cables are tied to the ground at each end. We call these connections anchors.

The road, or deck, hangs below the main cables. Small vertical cables called hangers hold the deck up. These hangers pass the weight to the big cables. The cables then pass that weight to the towers. The towers feel a heavy downward push. We call this push compression.

The main cables also feel a pulling force. This pull is called tension. Long spans are easier to build this way. It can even be cheaper to build. These bridges can also handle earthquakes well. But, high winds can make the deck shake. Some old bridges used ropes made of yak skin. Today, we use strong metal wires.
