The 1978 film Superman is a famous story about a hero with amazing powers.

It follows the life of Kal-El, a baby from the planet Krypton. His father, Jor-El, sends him to Earth to save him from their exploding sun. On Earth, he is raised by Jonathan and Martha Kent in Smallville, Kansas. As he grows up, he discovers he has superhuman strength and can fly. He adopts the name Clark Kent to hide his true identity from the world.

To keep his secret, Clark works as a reporter for the Daily Planet in Metropolis. He wears glasses and acts very mild-mannered so no one suspects him. While working, he meets a brave journalist named Lois Lane.

Clark must balance his normal life with his duties as a hero. He wears a blue and red suit with an "S" shield on his chest. He uses his incredible abilities to save people from accidents and danger. This dual life allows him to help others while staying safe from enemies.

A main villain in the story is a genius named Lex Luthor.

Luthor plots to sink parts of the United States to create new coastline. He uses a green meteorite called Kryptonite to make Superman feel very weak. Even when he is hurt by this rock, Superman tries to stop the danger. The hero must fight to protect landmarks like the Golden Gate Bridge. He even uses his powers to fly around the Earth to change time. This helps him save Lois Lane from a terrible accident.

Making this movie was a huge job that took many years.

Ilya Salkind first had the idea for the film in 1973. The crew began filming in March 1977 and finished in October 1978. It was the most expensive movie ever made at that time, with a budget of $55 million. Christopher Reeve was chosen for the lead role after more than 200 actors auditioned. The film was a massive success and earned $300 million at the box office. It was the second-highest-grossing movie of 1978.

This film changed how people think about superhero stories in Hollywood.

It was famous for using new special effects to show flight and strength. The movie was even chosen by the Library of Congress for preservation. People still love the music written by John Williams. The film won a Special Achievement Academy Award for its visual effects. It also received nominations for Best Music and Best Sound. Today, it is remembered as a groundbreaking piece of science fiction history.
