Super Rugby is a professional men's rugby union competition. It brings together elite club teams from the Pacific region. Currently, the tournament features teams from Australia, New Zealand, and the Pacific Islands. This includes the Fijian Drua and Moana Pasifika. In previous years, the competition included teams from Argentina, Japan, and South Africa.

The tournament serves as a high-level platform for professional rugby talent. It showcases the skill and intensity of the sport across different nations.

Teams compete to earn points in a ranking system. A win earns a team four competition points. If a match ends in a draw, both teams receive two points. The system also includes a bonus points mechanism. A team earns an extra point if they score four or more tries. They also receive a bonus point if they lose by seven points or less. In 2016, the try bonus rule changed. Now, a team must score three more tries than their opponent to earn that point.

The competition has used several different structures over time. Prior to 2011, it was a round-robin tournament. In this format, every team played every other team exactly once. This resulted in six or seven home and away games for each side. From 2011 to 2015, the format shifted to a conference system. Each country formed its own conference of teams. Teams played their conference rivals twice, once at home and once away. They also played four teams from each of the other conferences once.

Between 2016 and 2017, the tournament expanded further. It included teams from Argentina, Japan, and South Africa. This created four distinct conferences. The finals during this era involved eight teams. Each conference winner received a home quarter-final match. They were joined by four wild card teams. The wild cards included three teams from the Australasian group and one from South Africa. After 2018, the structure changed again when some teams were dropped. This left three conferences, including one for New Zealand and one for Argentina.

The history of the competition began long before the modern era. The South Pacific Championship launched in 1986. This was followed by the Super 6 in 1992. The Super 6 included teams from New Zealand, Australia, and Fiji. In 1993, the Super 10 tournament was created. This expansion allowed South African provincial teams to join. In 1995, rugby union became a professional sport. This led to the creation of SANZAAR in 1996. SANZAAR is the body that administers Super Rugby. Its members include the rugby unions of Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, and Argentina.

The COVID-19 pandemic caused major changes to the tournament. International travel restrictions forced the competition to split into regional groups. Australia held Super Rugby AU, while New Zealand held Super Rugby Aotearoa. These were followed by a crossover tournament called Super Rugby Trans-Tasman in 2021. During this time, South African and Argentine teams left the competition. The South African franchises planned to join the PRO14. The Japanese Sunwolves also departed after the 2020 season.

Since 2022, the tournament has been known as Super Rugby Pacific. It has returned to a 12-team round-robin format. There are no longer separate divisions. Instead, all teams compete on one main log. The top eight teams qualify for the playoffs. A notable feature is the "Super Round." During this event, an entire round of matches occurs over one weekend. All games are played at a single stadium. The 2022, 2023, and 2024 Super Rounds were all held at AAMI Park in Melbourne. New Zealand teams have historically dominated the competition. They have won 21 of the 28 titles, with 13 of those being individual championship wins.
