Sunlight is the energy sent from the Sun to our planet.

It is a special kind of radiation called solar radiation. This energy reaches Earth in many different forms. Some parts are visible light that we see with our eyes. Other parts are invisible, like infrared light which we feel as warmth. There is also ultraviolet light, which we call UV. UV light can cause sunburns, but it also helps humans make vitamin D3.

Light travels from the Sun to the Earth in a specific way. It takes about 8.3 minutes for sunlight to reach us. Inside the Sun, light starts at the very center. A tiny particle called a photon must travel to the surface. It can take 10,000 to 170,000 years to get there! This is because the photon hits many charged particles along the way. Once it leaves the Sun, it travels quickly through space. When it hits our atmosphere, the air filters and scatters the light.

Scientists have studied how this energy works for a long time. They use special tools to measure the intensity of the light. One tool is called a pyranometer. Another tool used by researchers is a pyrheliometer. They also use a sunshine recorder to track the light. These tools help us understand how much energy hits a certain area. This measurement is called solar irradiance. Knowing these numbers helps us understand how the Earth stays warm.

There are many interesting facts about the power of sunlight. At the top of our atmosphere, sunlight is very strong. It is about 30% more intense there than at the ground. At the surface, sunlight is made of different parts. About 52 to 55 percent of the energy is infrared light. About 42 to 43 percent is visible light. The last 3 to 5 percent is ultraviolet light.

The amount of light changes depending on the time of year. In January, the energy is about 3.3% higher than average. In July, it is about 3.3% lower.

Sunlight connects to almost everything in our daily lives. It is the main power source for photosynthesis. This is how plants turn light into food to grow.

Sunlight also provides natural lighting for the inside of buildings. This is called daylighting. Using natural light can be better than using artificial lights. For example, sunlight is more efficient than many types of indoor bulbs. It helps light up our world in a beautiful way every day.
