The sunflower sea star is a huge animal in the Pacific Ocean.

The Nature Conservancy and the University of Washington are helping. They are trying captive breeding to grow more stars in labs. This includes studying how the young larvae grow. Ecologists found that the mean biomass declined by 80% to 100% during their study period from 2004 to 2017. In the waters near Washington, the population was reduced by 99.2%. This sudden disappearance has changed the ecology of the entire Pacific coast.
The decline is linked to sea star wasting disease and warmer water temperatures. Warmer waters caused by global climate change make the disease more harmful. Scientists once thought a virus called SSaDV caused the sickness. However, in 2025, researchers identified a bacterium called Vibrio pectenicida strain FHCF-3 as the cause.
