Physically, the sugar glider is well-adapted for life in the forest canopy. It has thick, soft fur that is usually blue-grey, though some individuals are tan or yellow. A dark stripe runs from the nose to the middle of the back, and the underside is a lighter cream color. This is called countershading, which helps them blend into their environment. Their large eyes are specialized for night vision and are set far apart to help with triangulation during flight. They even possess trichromacy, meaning they can see colors in the ultraviolet, green, and red ranges. 
Detailed anatomy also aids their survival in complex tree environments. Each foot has five digits, and the hind feet feature an opposable, clawless toe that works much like a human thumb. This allows them to grasp branches with great strength. On the hind feet, the second and third digits are partially fused to form a grooming comb. Males also possess four specific scent glands on the forehead, chest, and near the cloaca to mark territory. These glands often appear as bald spots on the male's head and chest. 
The history of how these animals arrived in Australia is a subject of scientific study. The genus *Petaurus* likely originated in New Guinea during the mid-Miocene epoch, about 18 to 24 million years ago. It is believed that ancestors of the Australian species moved from New Guinea to Australia between 4.8 and 8.4 million years ago. This migration was likely made possible by lower sea levels that created land bridges between the two landmasses. The oldest *Petaurus* fossils found in Australia date back to 4.46 million years. 
Taxonomy, or the science of naming and classifying species, has changed significantly for the sugar glider. In the past, scientists thought *P. breviceps* had a massive range and many subspecies. However, a 2010 genetic analysis revealed that many of these groups were not genetically unique. A landmark study in 2020 suggested that what we call "sugar gliders" actually include three distinct, cryptic species. These are the Krefft's glider (*P. notatus*), the savanna glider (*P. ariel*), and the strictly defined *P. breviceps*. The true *P. breviceps* is actually range-restricted to coastal forests in southern Queensland and New South Wales. 
Survival in the wild requires strict energy management, especially regarding diet and temperature. Sugar gliders are seasonal omnivores. In the summer, they are primarily insectivorous, eating many insects. In the winter, they become exudativores, meaning they feed on substances like acacia gum, eucalyptus sap, or honeydew. To survive cold periods when food is scarce, they use a process called torpor. This is a short-term daily cycle where the animal lowers its body temperature and activity levels to save energy. By entering torpor for 2 to 23 hours, they can endure harsh conditions until food becomes available again.
