Substation

technology Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A substation is a vital part of how we get electricity. It sits between the big power plants and your home.

These stations help manage the flow of electric power. They can change the voltage, which is the level of electric power.

Some substations make the voltage higher to move power over long distances. Other substations make the voltage lower so it is safe for houses. Without them, the power grid would not work well.

Substations work in several different ways to help the grid. A transmission substation connects two or more large power lines.

It might use high-voltage switches to connect or isolate lines for repairs. A distribution substation takes power from these big lines and lowers it.

This lower power then travels along streets to reach your building. Some special stations called collector substations work in reverse. They take power from wind farms and send it up to the main grid.

People have used substations for a very long time. The name comes from before we had a giant connected grid.

Back then, small power plants were turned into distribution stations. They received energy from much larger plants instead of making it themselves. The very first substations were just small parts of a single power station. Today, they are much more complex and can be owned by big companies.

There are many interesting facts about these stations. For example, there are 55,000 substations in the United States alone.

Some substations are built to look like normal houses.

This helps them blend into a neighborhood in a big city. There are even mobile substations that sit on trailers.

These can be pulled by a truck to help during a war or a natural disaster.

You can think of a substation like a series of gates on a road.

Just as gates can direct traffic or slow cars down, substations direct electricity. They can speed up the voltage for a long trip or slow it down for a local street. They can also act like a safety switch. If lightning hits a line, the substation can isolate that part of the system. This keeps the rest of the lights on for everyone else.
