The Earth is made of many layers of rock and sediment. Each single layer is called a stratum.

These layers are very important to scientists. They can cover huge areas of the Earth. Some layers span hundreds of thousands of square kilometers. You might see them in a cliff or a river bank. They often look like colorful bands of different materials.

Layers form in a specific way. One layer sits on top of another layer. This creates a stack of parallel layers. These stacks can grow to enormous thicknesses. In parts of Nova Scotia, Canada, layers are 8,800 meters thick.

The lines between layers are called bedding planes. These planes happen when the making of layers stops. Sometimes wind or water wears the ground down first. This creates a break before a new layer starts.

Geologists use different names for these layers. A bed is the smallest formal unit. It is a single layer that looks different from those above or below. A flow is a special type of volcanic layer. It is made when lava moves. A band is a very thin layer. It is easy to see because of its color or texture.

Scientists also look for a key bed. A key bed is also called a marker bed. It is a very easy layer to find. It might have a special color or fossils inside. This helps scientists map the ground. They can use it to match layers in different places. Some layers come from sand dunes or beach sand. Other layers come from river silt or even coal swamps.

Knowing about strata helps us understand our world. It is like reading a book made of stone. Each layer tells a story of what happened long ago. A layer might show a time when there was a lava bed. Another might show a time with a lot of sand. By looking at these bands, we see the history of the Earth.
