Stramenopiles are a large group of tiny living things. We call them protists. Most are single cells. Some are big, like brown algae seaweed.

Most stramenopiles have a special look. They have two tails called flagella. These tails help them move through water. One tail is smooth. The other tail has stiff hairs. We call these hairs mastigonemes.

These hairs have three parts. They have a flexible base. Then they have a stiff tube. Finally, they have many tiny, thin hairs at the tip.

Many stramenopiles use light to make food. They have parts called plastids to do this. These plastids make them look gold, orange, or brown.

Diatoms are a famous group of these. They live in the sea and fresh water. They help the whole planet by making food from light. Some stramenopiles do not use light. They eat other things instead. Some even live inside other animals. These can be parasites.
