The Strait of Otranto is a part of the sea.

The Strait of Otranto is a narrow strip of water.

This place has been important for a long time. Ancient Romans used the water to move their troops. They sailed from Brindisi to reach Albania. Later, during World War I, navies used the strait for a blockade. This was called the Otranto Barrage. They used small boats to stop other ships.
In 1992, Italy and Albania signed a treaty. This deal set the boundary between the two lands. The strait can be a hard place to cross. Sadly, many people died trying to cross it in 1997 and 2004.
Some people have crossed the water in new ways. In 2024, a woman named Eva Buzo swam the whole way. She swam 92 kilometres from Italy to Albania. It took her 35 hours to finish her swim.
The Strait of Otranto is a narrow strip of sea.

This place has been important for a very long time. Ancient Romans used the water to move their armies. They would sail from a place called Brundisium. Today, we call that city Brindisi. The trip to Albania took only one day by sea. Once they landed, they could walk east on the Via Egnatia. This was a famous path for travelers and soldiers.
During World War I, the strait was used for a blockade. This was called the Otranto Barrage. Navies from Italy, France, and Great Britain worked together. They used small fishing boats called drifters to block the way. They wanted to stop the Austro-Hungarian Navy from entering the Mediterranean Sea. However, the blockade did not work well against German and Austrian U-boats. These were special submarines that moved through the water.
In 1992, Italy and Albania signed a special treaty. This agreement set the boundary for the continental shelf. This is the area of the sea floor between the lands. The treaty gave administration rights to Albania. The strait has also seen very sad times for people. In 1997 and 2004, many people died trying to cross the water. These events are called the Tragedy of Otranto and the Karaburun tragedy.
Today, people still find ways to cross the strait. In 2006, Albania made new rules for motor boats. They wanted to stop crime on the water. This rule lasted until at least 2013. Some people cross the water by swimming instead. In August 2024, a woman named Eva Buzo made history. She swam 92 kilometres from Lecce in Italy to Vlora in Albania. It took her 35 hours of swimming to finish.
The Strait of Otranto is a vital maritime passage.

Historically, this passage has held immense strategic importance. The ancient Romans utilized the strait for military transport. They moved their legions eastward toward the Balkan region. Soldiers would march to the city of Brundisium. This city is known today as Brindisi. From there, they began a short sea voyage. The trip to modern Albanian territory took only one day. Once they landed, they used the Via Egnatia. This was a major road used to move eastwards.
During World War I, the strait became a site of naval conflict. The Allied powers attempted to control the passage. This effort was known as the Otranto Barrage. Navies from Italy, France, and Great Britain participated. They used light naval forces to maintain the blockade. They also employed drifters, which are lightly armed fishing vessels. Their goal was to restrict the Austro-Hungarian Navy. They wanted to prevent them from entering the Mediterranean Sea. However, the barrage faced significant challenges. It was notoriously ineffective against U-boats. These were German and Austrian submarines. These vessels continued to operate throughout the Mediterranean war theatre.
Modern political agreements have also shaped the strait. In 1992, Italy and Albania signed a significant treaty. This treaty delimited the continental shelf boundary. The continental shelf is the area of seabed around a landmass. The agreement granted administration rights to Albania. This did not significantly change the former arrangements regarding Otranto.
Tragic events have also occurred within these waters. The strait has been a site of human hardship. In 1997 and 2004, nearly 100 people lost their lives. They were attempting to cross the strait illegally. These events followed unrest in Albania and poor economic conditions. They are known as the Tragedy of Otranto and the Karaburun tragedy.
Governance in the strait has also involved strict maritime rules. In 2006, the Albanian government took specific action. They imposed a moratorium on motor-powered sailing boats. This rule applied to all lakes, rivers, and seas in Albania. The goal was to curb organized crime. This moratorium was extended until 2013. There were certain exceptions to this rule. Government-owned boats and foreign-owned boats were allowed. Fishing boats and jet boats were also exempt.
Despite the challenges, the strait is a place of incredible human feats. People still find ways to traverse the distance. In 2010, the era of swimming records began to grow. In August 2024, Eva Buzo completed a historic swim. She is a long-distance swimmer from Sydney.
