A stove, also known as a range, is a device designed to generate heat. This heat is used for local heating or for cooking food. 
To understand how a stove works, we must look at the process of combustion. Combustion is the chemical process of burning fuel to create heat. In many stoves, air is introduced to help this process. Air-tight stoves are designed to burn fuel more completely than conventional models. This complete burning reduces the amount of combustion by-products released into the air. Some systems also use an afterburner or a filter to clean the exhaust gas before it leaves the device. 
Stoves have evolved through many distinct stages and types. For millennia, people used ceramic clay ovens for cooking. Another important type is the masonry heater, which was developed during Neolithic times. These heaters are designed to allow complete combustion by burning fuel at full temperature. They have a large thermal mass, which means they can store a lot of heat. This captured heat is radiated over long periods without needing constant firing. Because of this, the surface of a masonry heater is generally not dangerous to touch.

The history of cooking begins with open fires used nearly two million years ago. During the Paleolithic era, roughly 200,000 to 40,000 years ago, humans built primitive hearths. These were often simple circles of stones used for warmth and food. Most open fires are only about 30% efficient on average. Eventually, people began placing vessels on supports like a base of three stones. This three-stone stove is a design that is still widely used around the world today. 

Metal stoves changed how people heated their homes and cooked. In 1642, the first cast-iron stove was built in Lynn, Massachusetts. Later, in 1742, Benjamin Franklin designed the "Pennsylvania fireplace," now known as the Franklin stove. This device used a grate to burn wood and sliding doors to control the draught, or air flow. It featured a labyrinthine path for hot exhaust gases. This path allowed heat to enter the room instead of escaping up the chimney. The Franklin stove was very efficient, requiring only one-quarter the fuel of a regular fireplace.

As technology advanced, new fuels like gas and electricity became common. James Sharp invented the first commercial gas stove in 1834. Gas stoves became popular because they were easier to maintain than wood or coal models. However, indoor nitrogen dioxide (NO2) from gas stoves can exceed safety benchmarks set by the EPA and WHO. Electric stoves also gained popularity after the advent of home electricity. In 1892, Thomas Ahearn demonstrated a meal prepared entirely with electricity. 
Induction technology represents a modern leap in stove design. The first patents for induction stoves appeared in the early 1900s. In the mid-1950s, General Motors showed demonstration units that could heat water with a newspaper in between. Modern implementation in the United States began in the early 1970s. A team at Westinghouse, led by Bill Moreland and Terry Malarkey, developed the Cool Top 2 induction range. These modern stoves are now produced by many companies, including Samsung, LG, and IKEA.
