Stone Mountain is a huge rock in Georgia.
It sits near the city of Atlanta. Many people visit the park there.
The top is very high. You can walk up a trail to get there.
You can also ride a tram called the Skyride.
At the top, there are pools of water. Rain fills these pools.
Tiny shrimp live in the water when it rains.
There is a giant carving on the mountain side. It shows three men from a past war.
It is the largest carving of its kind in the world.
Stone Mountain is a very special place to see.
Stone Mountain is a large rock dome in Georgia.
It sits east of the city of Atlanta. It is part of a big park. This park is the most visited site in the state.
The mountain is made of hard rock. It is made of quartz monzonite, granite, and granodiorite. Long ago, magma rose from inside the Earth. This magma cooled to form the rock. Over a long time, erosion helped show the mountain.
You can reach the top in two ways. You can walk up a trail on the west side. Or, you can ride the Skyride. The Skyride is an aerial tram.
At the top, you can see the city of Atlanta. You can even see the Appalachian Mountains on clear days.
There is a giant carving on the north face. It is the largest bas-relief in the world. A bas-relief is a type of art carved into rock. The carving shows three leaders from the Civil War.
The project took many years to finish. It was completed in 1972.
Stone Mountain is a huge rock dome located in Georgia.
It sits just east of the city of Atlanta. The mountain is the center of Stone Mountain Park. This park is the most visited tourist site in the state.
The area around the park includes the city of Stone Mountain. Many people come here to see the natural landscape and the art.
The mountain formed a very long time ago. It began as magma rising from inside the Earth's crust. This magma cooled and hardened into rock below the surface. Scientists call this type of rock formation a pluton.
The rock is mostly quartz monzonite, but it also has granite and granodiorite. Over millions of years, erosion wore away the land. This process eventually exposed the hard rock dome we see today.
People have been using the mountain for many years. In 1958, the state of Georgia bought the mountain. They purchased it from the Venable Brothers for $1,125,000. The state wanted to create a memorial to the Confederacy.
The official Stone Mountain Park opened on April 14, 1965. This date was exactly 100 years after the death of Abraham Lincoln. Today, the state of Georgia owns and manages the entire park.
There is a very famous carving on the north face. It is the largest bas-relief artwork in the world.
A bas-relief is a sculpture that stays close to the surface. This carving shows three Confederate leaders from the Civil War. These leaders are Jefferson Davis, Robert E. Lee, and Stonewall Jackson.
The carving was finished in 1972 by Roy Faulkner. It took many different artists and many years to complete the project.
Visitors can explore the mountain in different ways. You can take a walk up a trail on the west side.
You can also ride the Skyride, which is an aerial tram.
At the summit, you can see the skyline of Atlanta. On very clear days, you might even see the Appalachian Mountains. The top of the mountain has rock pools filled with rainwater. These pools are home to tiny living things like clam shrimp.
Stone Mountain is a massive quartz monzonite dome monadnock located in Georgia.
It sits just east of the city of Atlanta. The mountain is the centerpiece of Stone Mountain Park. This park is the most visited tourist site in the state.
The surrounding area includes the city of Stone Mountain. The mountain is a significant geological feature and a site of major historical controversy.
The mountain is a pluton, which is a type of igneous intrusion. This means it formed from magma rising within the Earth's crust. This process occurred during the Carboniferous period, roughly 300 to 350 million years ago.
At that time, the Blue Ridge Mountains were forming as part of the Appalachian Mountains. The magma solidified into hard rock beneath the surface. This happened during the Alleghenian Orogeny, when North America and North Africa collided. Over millions of years, erosion removed the top layers of earth. This eventually exposed the resistant igneous rock we see today.
The composition of the rock is complex. While often called a pink granite dome, it actually contains quartz monzonite, granite, and granodiorite.
The rock includes minerals like quartz, plagioclase feldspar, microcline, and muscovite. It also contains smaller amounts of biotite and tourmaline. Some tourmaline exists as black, skeletal crystals. Other large, euhedral pegmatitic tourmaline crystals are found in felsic dikes. The granite also contains xenoliths, which are pieces of foreign rock trapped in the magma. This geological event also created Panola Mountain and Arabia Mountain in DeKalb County.
The summit of the mountain offers a unique ecosystem. The top is a landscape of bare rock and rock pools.
These pools form when rainwater gathers in eroded depressions. They are called vernal pools. These pools host rare species like clam shrimp and fairy shrimp. These tiny shrimp use cryptobiosis to survive. This means their eggs, or cysts, stay dormant in dry pools for years. They only emerge when the rainy season returns. The summit also hosts rare plants like black-spored quillwort and pool sprite.
Visitors can reach the top via a walk-up trail on the west side.
Alternatively, they can use the Skyride, which is an aerial tram.
From the summit, one can see the Atlanta skyline and Kennesaw Mountain. On clear days, the Appalachian Mountains are visible. The lower slopes are heavily wooded. The rare Georgia oak was first discovered at the summit. In the fall, Confederate yellow daisies grow in rock crevices. More than 120 types of wildflowers have been identified here.
The mountain is famous for the Confederate Memorial Carving. This is the largest bas-relief artwork in the world.
A bas-relief is a sculpture where the figures remain close to a background. The carving depicts Jefferson Davis, Robert E. Lee, and Stonewall Jackson.
The project had a long and difficult history. In 1914, C. Helen Plane of the United Daughters of the Confederacy began organizing the memorial. She worked with sculptor Gutzon Borglum. However, Borglum was fired in 1925 due to financial conflicts. He even fled to North Carolina to avoid arrest. Other sculptors, including Augustus Lukeman and later Walker Hancock, worked on the project. Roy Faulkner finally completed the carving in 1972.
The history of the site includes many layers of social and political tension. In 1915, William J. Simmons founded the reborn Ku Klux Klan atop the mountain.
The mountain has also been a site for controversial displays. In 1963, a replica plantation was opened.
This site featured slave cabins moved from the Graves Plantation. The park was purchased by the state of Georgia in 1958 for $1,125,000. This purchase was intended to create a memorial to the Confederacy. Today, the park remains a major destination with complex historical ties.
