René Laennec invented the first stethoscope in 1816. He used a wooden tube. He made it because he felt shy. He did not want to put his ear on a patient's chest. He saw that a rolled paper could make sounds louder.

Most stethoscopes today are acoustic. This means they use sound waves to work. A small part called a diaphragm touches your skin. This part is a flat disc. It hears high sounds. Another part is called a bell. The bell is a hollow cup. It hears low sounds.

Sound travels through hollow tubes to the doctor's ears.

Some doctors use electronic stethoscopes. These tools use power to make sounds louder. They turn sound waves into electric signals. Some can even send sounds to a phone or tablet. This helps doctors treat people from far away.
