Steric effects

physical science Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Everything in the world takes up space. In chemistry, atoms are arranged into shapes called molecules. Steric effects happen because of how these atoms are placed in space.

When atoms get very close, they can push against each other. This push happens because their electron clouds overlap. This interaction can change the shape of a molecule. It also changes how molecules react with other things. These effects work alongside electronic effects to decide a molecule's shape.

Sometimes, these effects lead to something called steric hindrance. This happens when bulky groups make a chemical reaction much slower. Think of it like trying to walk through a crowded room. If the people are too large, you move more slowly. In a molecule, large groups can block other parts from getting close. This is often used to control selectivity in reactions. It helps scientists slow down unwanted side-reactions.

This bulk can even change the angles of chemical bonds.

Scientists use many methods to measure how bulky a group is. One way is to look at reaction rates. For example, methyl bromide reacts much faster than neopentyl bromide. This is because the neopentyl group is very bulky and blocks the reaction. Another measure is called an A-value. This comes from looking at how groups sit on a cyclohexane ring.

A methyl group has an A-value of 1.74. Larger groups like tert-butyl have even higher values.

There are other ways to measure size in chemistry. Scientists use cone angles in coordination chemistry. A cone angle measures the space a ligand takes up around a metal. For example, PH3 has a small angle of 87 degrees. However, the larger P(t-Bu)3 has a huge angle of 182 degrees.

They also look at ceiling temperatures in polymers. This is the temperature where a polymer stops growing and starts breaking down. Monomers with high steric bulk often create polymers with low ceiling temperatures.

These tiny pushes are very important for life and science. In biochemistry, enzymes use steric effects to work. The active site of an enzyme might be buried deep inside a protein. In pharmacology, these effects help decide how a drug works. They determine how fast a drug interacts with its target in your body.

Even in organic chemistry, these effects are nearly universal. They can even help keep a molecular core stable. Without these effects, many molecules would fall apart.
