In many old fairy tales, stepmothers are shown as mean. You can find this in stories like Snow White or Cinderella. Some stories even show stepmothers trying to hurt children. This can happen to stepdaughters or stepsons.

These stories might make people think stepmothers are bad. This is called a stigma. It can make real stepmothers feel sad about themselves.

But these stories do not show the whole truth. In some tales, a stepmother is very kind. One Icelandic story shows a stepmother who acts like a fairy godmother. In China, some stories show stepmothers who are great role models. They care for all children in the family.

Real life is different from fiction. Many stepmothers are loving and kind. In the movie Enchanted, a character shows that being a stepmother does not change a person's heart. Some families are very happy with a new stepmother. They can all live well together.
