Stephen William Hawking was a brilliant English theoretical astrophysicist and cosmologist.

He spent much of his career at the University of Cambridge. There, he served as the Lucasian Professor of Mathematics from 1979 to 2009. This was one of the most prestigious academic positions in the world. Hawking was also a director of research at the Centre for Theoretical Cosmology. His work helped define how we understand the fundamental laws of the universe. He sought to explain the cosmos through the union of different scientific theories.

Hawking was born on January 8, 1942, in Oxford. His parents, Frank and Isobel Hawking, both attended the University of Oxford. His father was a medical researcher specializing in tropical diseases. Hawking later said he modeled his own life on his father's scientific career. However, he chose physics over biology because he wanted to study something more fundamental. During his childhood in St Albans, he was known for his curiosity and hands-on skills. He once built a computer using recycled clock parts and an old telephone switchboard. He also assembled a record player from cheap, spare parts.

In 1959, at age 17, Hawking began his studies at University College, Oxford. He studied physics and chemistry to earn a first-class BA degree. During his time at Oxford, he was a lively student and a member of the boat club.

He even served as a coxswain for a rowing crew. In 1962, he moved to Trinity Hall, Cambridge, for his graduate work. He earned his PhD in applied mathematics and theoretical physics in 1966. His research focused on the complex fields of general relativity and cosmology. These subjects involve how gravity, space, and time interact on a massive scale.

In 1963, at the age of 21, Hawking faced a life-changing diagnosis. Doctors identified an early-onset, slow-progressing form of motor neurone disease. This condition gradually paralyzed his body over several decades. Eventually, the disease caused him to lose his ability to speak. To continue communicating, he used a speech-generating device. He eventually controlled this technology using only a single cheek muscle. Despite this physical struggle, he lived for more than 50 years after his diagnosis. He remained a productive scientist until his death in 2018 at age 76.

Hawking's scientific contributions changed the field of theoretical physics. He collaborated with Roger Penrose on gravitational singularity theorems. A singularity is a point where gravity becomes incredibly intense. They proved that if the universe follows general relativity, it likely began as a singularity. Hawking also made a famous prediction regarding black holes. He proposed that black holes emit radiation, now known as Hawking radiation.

While this idea was controversial at first, it became a widely accepted breakthrough by the late 1970s. He also introduced the concept of the micro black hole.

Beyond his research, Hawking was a highly successful author. He wrote popular science books to explain complex ideas to the public. His most famous work, *A Brief History of Time*, was a massive commercial success. It remained on the *Sunday Times* bestseller list for a record-breaking 237 weeks. His ability to communicate science helped bridge the gap between experts and the general public. This work ensured his theories reached people all over the world.

Hawking received many of the world's highest honors for his intellect and service. He was a Fellow of the Royal Society and a lifetime member of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences. He also received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian award in the United States. In 2002, the BBC ranked him 25th in a poll of the 100 Greatest Britons. His life connected the worlds of high-level mathematics, cosmic exploration, and public education. He remains a symbol of how the human mind can explore the universe regardless of physical limits.
