Stefka Georgieva Kostadinova is a legendary Bulgarian athlete. She specialized in the high jump, a track and field event. In this sport, athletes attempt to leap over a horizontal bar. The bar is placed at increasing heights. The goal is to clear the bar without knocking it down. Kostadinova became one of the most successful high jumpers in history. She was famous for her consistency and her ability to reach extreme heights. Her achievements include numerous world records and Olympic medals.

High jumping requires immense physical power and precise technique. An athlete must convert horizontal speed into vertical lift. Kostadinova demonstrated incredible mastery over this movement. She achieved the rare feat of jumping over 2.00 metres exactly 197 times. This number shows her remarkable ability to perform at an elite level repeatedly. Her jumps were not just successful; they were record-breaking. She set a total of seven world records during her career. These included three outdoor records and four indoor records.

Kostadinova's career was defined by several distinct stages of success. She dominated both indoor and outdoor competitions. In the indoor circuit, she won five World Indoor Championships between 1985 and 1997. She also claimed four European indoor titles. In outdoor competitions, she was a two-time World champion. She won the outdoor World Championships in 1987 and 1995. Furthermore, she won every European outdoor championship in which she competed. These titles prove her dominance across different environments and formats.

Her journey into athletics began in Plovdiv, Bulgaria. She attended a specialist sports school to develop her talents. However, she did not start high jumping immediately. She was introduced to the event during a Year Six athletics meet in Sofia. She was approximately 12 or 13 years old at the time. Kostadinova has stated that she would never forget that specific day. This single event launched a career that would span decades. She soon moved from local meets to the world stage.

One of her most significant achievements occurred in 1987. At the World Championships in Athletics in Rome, she set a massive world record. She cleared a height of 2.09 metres. This specific record was incredibly durable. It stood for 37 years until it was finally broken in 2024 by Yaroslava Mahuchikh.

Her 2.09-metre jump remains a landmark in the history of the sport. She also earned an Olympic silver medal in Seoul in 1988. Later, she reached the pinnacle of the Olympics by winning gold in Atlanta in 1996. At those games, she set an Olympic record of 2.05 metres.

Her excellence earned her many prestigious honors in her home country. She was voted the Bulgarian Sportsperson of the Year four times. These honors came in 1985, 1987, 1995, and 1996. Additionally, she was named the BTA Best Balkan Athlete of the Year five times. These awards occurred in 1985, 1987, 1995, 1996, and 1997. These recognitions highlight her status as a premier athlete in her region. Even during personal transitions, such as the birth of her son Nikolay in 1995, she continued to win gold at the World Championships.

After retiring from professional competition, Kostadinova transitioned into sports administration. She used her experience to lead athletic organizations. She served as a vice president for both the Bulgarian Athletic Federation and the Bulgarian Olympic Committee. She also held the position of deputy sports minister of Bulgaria from 2003 to 2005. On 11 November 2005, she was elected president of the Bulgarian Olympic Committee. She held this leadership role until 2025. Her career shows how an elite athlete can influence the entire sporting system through leadership.
