Stefan Uroš IV Dušan, often called Dušan the Mighty, was a monumental figure in medieval history. He ruled as the King of Serbia starting on September 8, 1331. Later, on April 16, 1346, he took the title of Emperor. He ruled over the Serbs, Greeks, Bulgarians, and Albanians. Under his leadership, Serbia became the most powerful state in Southeast Europe. It was also one of the most powerful states in all of Europe. His empire was a multi-ethnic and multilingual Eastern Orthodox state. It stretched from the Danube River in the north to the Gulf of Corinth in the south. He established his capital in the city of Skopje.
Dušan's path to the throne involved significant family conflict and civil war. He was the son of King Stefan Dečanski and Theodora Smilets. His mother was the daughter of the Bulgarian Emperor Smilets. In 1314, Dušan's family lived in Constantinople after his father was exiled. This time in the Byzantine capital allowed Dušan to learn the Greek language and customs. He grew up interested in the arts of war and showed early talent. In 1329, he defeated Bosnian forces during the War of Hum. In 1330, he won the Battle of Velbužd against the Bulgarian Emperor Michael III Shishman.
In 1331, a major struggle broke out between Dušan and his father. Advisors may have pressured Dečanski to exclude Dušan from his inheritance. This led to a period of anarchy and military action. Dušan eventually besieged his father at Nerodimlje. On August 21, 1331, Dečanski surrendered and was imprisoned. Dušan was crowned King of All Serbian and Maritime lands in September 1331.
Dušan expanded his territory through strategic military campaigns and diplomacy. He used the civil war within the Byzantine Empire to his advantage. By 1342, he began a systematic offensive against Byzantine lands. He conquered most Byzantine territories in the western Balkans. His reach extended as far as Kavala. However, he could not take Thessaloniki or the Peloponnesus because he lacked a large enough fleet. He also managed complex relations with neighbors like Bulgaria. He married Helen of Bulgaria to secure a peace alliance. In 1333, he also negotiated a deal with Ragusa. He sold the town of Ston and the Pelješac peninsula for 8,000 perpers. He also received an annual tribute of 500 perpers from them.
Beyond warfare, Dušan focused on legal and religious institutions. He enacted the Dušan Code, which was a vital legal document. This code is considered one of the most important literary works of medieval Serbia. He also strengthened the Serbian Church. He promoted it from an archbishopric to a patriarchate. Dušan was a great builder of religious sites. He completed the Visoki Dečani Monastery, which was started by his father. He also founded the monastery of the Holy Archangels.
Dušan's reign was marked by a desire to create a massive, united empire. He changed his titles to reflect this growing ambition. In 1343, he called himself King of Serbia, Albania, and the coast. He added "of Romans" to his title, which was the term for Greeks. By 1345, he began using the title of Tsar, which means Emperor.
His sudden death in December 1355 brought an end to this era of strength. He died at his court in Prizren.
