By 1881, Aveling and Porter had even introduced compound steam engines to their designs.

Specific design features helped these machines perform their heavy tasks. Many rollers included scraper bars on the front and rear rolls. As the vehicle moved, these bars removed any material that stuck to the rolls. This ensured the machine maintained a perfectly flat finish on the road. Some models also featured a tar sprayer mounted on the back. Others had a scarifier that could be swung down to rip up old road surfaces. The front of the machine often had a distinctive, hooded look due to an extended smokebox.

Today, the legacy of the steamroller continues through preservation and culture. Many machines are kept in working order for special steam festivals. In the United Kingdom, "Road Gangs" perform re-enactments of old road-making techniques. Some retired rollers even found new lives as equipment in children's playgrounds. While modern machines use diesel, people still colloquially call them steamrollers. They remain a symbol of an irresistible, onward-pushing force in human history.
